Southern Sweden has so much more to offer than sweeping forests, red wooden cottages and lakes tucked away between the trees. Scattered across the region you'll find centuries-old castles, striking buildings, historical monuments and places with a story to tell. Honestly, that's not what came to mind the first time I drove into southern Sweden.

Since we've lived in southern Sweden, we keep discovering new places that are worth a visit. Some sit in beautiful spots by the sea, while others take you into a completely different chapter of Swedish history.

In this blog we share a selection of remarkable sights in southern Sweden. From a mysterious stone monument on the coast to an impressive castle on Öland. Perfect inspiration for your next holiday or road trip through southern Sweden.

1. Sofiero Slott – a royal palace with beautiful gardens

Location: Helsingborg, Skåne

Sofiero Slott is one of the best-known palaces in southern Sweden. It sits just north of Helsingborg, in a lovely spot overlooking the Öresund and the Danish coast.

The palace was built in the nineteenth century and became famous mainly thanks to the royal family and its remarkable gardens. Those gardens might well be the biggest reason to visit Sofiero. You'll find colourful flower borders, old trees, lovely walking paths and an extensive collection of rhododendrons.

The park is especially colourful in late spring, when the rhododendrons bloom. But even outside that period, it's a lovely place for a quiet stroll.

Our tip: combine a visit to Sofiero with a trip to Helsingborg or a walk along the coast. Check the opening hours in advance, as the programme and accessibility of the palace and gardens can vary by season.

2. Nimis – a remarkable artwork on the coast

Location: Kullaberg, Skåne

On the rocky coast of the Kullaberg peninsula you'll find one of Sweden's most remarkable artworks: Nimis.

The artist Lars Vilks started building this sprawling wooden artwork here in 1980. It consists of a tangle of wooden structures, towers and passageways that blend into the rugged coastal landscape. Nimis lies hidden among the rocks, which makes it feel very different from a traditional sight.

It's precisely the combination of art, nature and a bit of adventure that makes this place so interesting. You're not just visiting an artwork in a museum, you actually have to walk there.

Our tip: wear sturdy walking shoes and expect a steep, rocky descent and climb. The route isn't suitable for everyone. Check current access information before you set off, and be extra careful in wet weather.

3. Ales stenar – a mysterious stone monument above the sea

Location: Kåseberga, Skåne

One of the most impressive historical sites in southern Sweden is Ales stenar. On top of a hill by the coast, 59 large stones are arranged in the shape of a ship.

The monument is about 67 metres long and probably dates from the period between 500 and 1000 AD. Who exactly placed the stones, and why, is still up for debate.

That's exactly what makes a visit so special. You stand in the middle of a centuries-old monument while looking out over the Baltic Sea and the rolling landscape of Österlen.

The site isn't just interesting because of its history. The view alone is reason enough to linger a while.

Our tip: visit Ales stenar early in the day or later in the afternoon if you want to avoid the biggest crowds. On a clear day, the view over the coast is stunning. Keep in mind that it can get quite windy on the hill.

4. Glimmingehus – back to the Middle Ages

Location: near Simrishamn, Skåne

If you're interested in castles and medieval history, Glimmingehus really shouldn't be missed.

This stone fortress was built from 1499 onwards, commissioned by the Danish nobleman Jens Holgersen Ulfstand. At the time, Skåne still belonged to Denmark. Glimmingehus wasn't just meant as a residence, it also had various defensive features.

Behind the thick walls you'll find all sorts of clever constructions designed to protect the building from attackers. Think hidden passages, defence mechanisms and facilities to heat the building.

Today you can visit the fortress and learn more about life in the Middle Ages. It's an interesting stop if you want to get a taste of the region's history during a holiday in Skåne.

Our tip: combine Glimmingehus with a drive through Österlen. That way, your visit turns into a lovely day trip along the southeastern coast of Skåne.

5. Tjolöholms Slott – a fairy-tale castle by the sea

Location: Fjärås, Halland

Tjolöholms Slott is a striking castle on Sweden's west coast. It was built around the turn of the twentieth century in a distinctly English style and sits on an estate by the sea.

The castle almost looks like it's straight out of a British period film. The architecture, the gardens and the waterside setting give the whole place its own unique character.

On the estate you can take walks and enjoy the view over the coast. Depending on the season, there are also opportunities to see the inside of the castle and learn more about the estate's history.

Our tip: take the time to explore the surroundings of the castle too. The combination of architecture, gardens and coastal landscape makes this a lovely stop on a road trip along Sweden's west coast.

6. Varbergs fästning – a fortress full of history

Location: Varberg, Halland

On the coast near Varberg stands an impressive fortress that has been a key part of Halland's history for centuries.

Varbergs fästning sits high above the sea and features thick stone walls, courtyards and views over the coast. Thanks to its strategic location, the fortress played an important role in a period when the Scandinavian countries were often in conflict with each other.

Inside the fortress you'll find the Hallands Kulturhistoriska Museum. There you can learn more about the region's history and discover the famous Bockstenman, among other things: a medieval man whose remarkably well-preserved remains were found in a peat bog.

Even if you don't want to visit a museum in detail, the grounds themselves make for an interesting place to wander around.

Our tip: turn it into a combined stop: walk around the fortress and along the coast, then visit the museum afterwards if you want to learn more about Halland's past.

7. Kalmar Slott – one of Sweden's most impressive castles

Location: Kalmar, Småland

Kalmar Slott is one of Sweden's best-known castles and an absolute must if you're in the Kalmar area.

The castle's origins date back to around 1180, when a defensive tower stood on this spot. In the centuries that followed it grew into an important fortress. In the sixteenth century the building largely took on the Renaissance appearance it has today.

The castle also played a key role in Scandinavian history. In 1397 the Kalmar Union was sealed here, uniting Denmark, Norway and Sweden under a single monarch.

Today you can walk through the historic rooms and courtyards and learn more about the building's royal history.

Our tip: set aside plenty of time for your visit. Kalmar Slott is more than just a pretty building for a photo, there's plenty to discover inside too. Why not combine it with a walk along the water.

8. Borgholms Slott – imposing castle ruins on Öland

Location: Borgholm, Öland

On the island of Öland you'll find the impressive ruins of Borgholms Slott. The castle stands on a hill overlooking the surrounding landscape and coast.

With its massive walls, open spaces and remnants of the former rooms, it's easy to picture how imposing the building must once have been. The castle went through several building phases and eventually became largely a ruin after a major fire in the eighteenth century.

Today it's a special place to wander around and get a sense of the scale of the former castle. The combination of the historic walls and the open landscape also makes it a very photogenic spot.

Our tip: combine Borgholms Slott with other historic sites on Öland. The island has a remarkably rich history, making it a great choice for a day full of culture and special places.

At the Marinmuseum you can learn more about that history. The museum sits right by the water and tells the story of the Swedish navy, from historic ships to the development of seafaring and military technology.

One of the most interesting things about the museum is how it brings maritime history to life. You can explore various objects and exhibitions that show how life on and around the sea changed over the centuries.

That makes the cathedral not only a religious building, but also a place where architecture, technology and history come together.

Our tip: take your time inside to look at the details, and check the current visiting hours beforehand. Keep in mind that the cathedral is also an active church, so there may be restrictions for visitors during services.
